10/30/2015 5:19:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Scott Grzenda, the Blue Hens have now qualified for the CAA Tournament for the third time in the last four years and for the seventh time since joining the league. The Hens will be looking to move past the quarterfinals for the third time and for the first time since 2011.
“The most important thing for us will be to control the tempo of the ball, keep the possession in the midfield, and keep their forwards and attack in front of us,” said Grzenda, the only head coach in UD women's soccer history. “Everyone of these girls knew we were good enough to make it to the playoffs this year. We went up there to Northeastern and won when we had to and hopefully that carry on into the playoffs.”
Delaware is led offensively by junior Natalie Zelenky, who ranks second in the league with 11 goals and second in game-winning goals with five. She has scored two or more goals in a game four times and her 11 goals are the most by a UD player since 2011. Defensively, senior back Maddy Parker has played every minute of every game this season and sophomore GK Kailyn Rekos ranks No. 2 in the CAA in saves per game (4.33) and No. 8 in save pct. (.747).
UNCW, which ranked No. 4 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region rankings, leads the CAA in scoring at 2.32 goals per game led by Newark, Del. native Maddie McCormick, who has a league-best 12 goals. The Seahawks have won three straight games by a combined margin of 15-0 and are 5-2 and have outscored opponents 21-5 since the Delaware game.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware is ranked No. 67 in the national RPI rankings out of 333 schools. UNCW is ranked 39th
• Delaware and UNCW will meet in the postseason for just the second time as the Seahawks advanced on penalty kicks (1-1) in the 2012 quarterfinals
• The Hens rank No. 6 in the CAA in scoring (1.39 goals per game) but are No. 10 in scoring defense (1.56 goals allowed per game).
• Delaware plays a clean game as the Hens have the fewest amount of fouls of any team in the CAA (6.94 per game) and lead the nation for fewest yellow cards (1)
• Blue Hen freshman Riley Curtin, who scored the game-winning goal vs. Northeastern, has 13 points (4 goals, 5 assists) on the season, the most by a Delaware rookie since Amy Picard had 19 points during the 2007 campaign. She is the second leading freshman scorer in the CAA behind Drexel's Vanessa Kara (24 points)
