MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- Led by a 22nd place finish by Betsy Erlanger, the University of Delaware women's cross country team posted a fifth place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships Saturday morning at the College of Charleston.
Erlanger, a junior from Pittsburgh, Pa. (Upper St. Clair HS), covered the six-kilometer Laurel Hill Plantation Course in a time of 22:01.8 to lead the Blue Hens. She finished just one spot off her 21st finish at year ago at the league meet.
William & Mary won its fourth straight team title with 23 points with James Madison finishing second with 54 points. Elon was third with 66 points followed by host College of Charleston (125), Delaware (153), Hofstra (163), Northeastern (173), Towson (210), and UNCW (260). William & Mary's Emily Stites won the individual title, breaking the tape with a time of 20:00.0.
“It was not a good day for us,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “We knew it was going to be tough to place in the top three but we were looking to improve our place from last season. Our team is young but we have the talent to be more competitive and perform better. We battled some injuries this season, which I think set us back a bit. Today we had good team energy, the ladies looked great and they felt good, but unfortunately we did not carry that feeling towards the end of the race.”
Delaware placed fifth for the second straight year after finishing third in both 2012 and 2013.
Also placing among the leaders for Delaware were Liz McGroarty, who was 33rd (22:19.0), Emily Paolucci was 34th (22:24.3), Lauren Zodl was 36th (22:28.3), Gabby Alaimo was 40th (22:37.3), Leanza Lopez was 53rd (23:14.2), and Erin McCloskey was 54th (23:14.6).
Delaware will take next week off and return to action Nov. 13 when the Hens take part in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals at Princeton.
