NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team fell behind two sets to one but dominated the fourth and fifth frames as the Blue Hens posted a five-set victory over Elon Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware, which won for the third time in its last four matches, captured the match by set scores of 26-24, 24-26, 18-25, 25-13, 15-7. Elon dropped to 6-20 overall and 2-10 in league play.
Blue Hen junior Autumn Jenkins recorded her team-leading 10th double-double of the season with a match-high 16 kills to go with 10 digs, while Chandler Bryant added 11 kills, a .526 attack percentage and eight blocks.
Katie Hillman also notched a double-double with 10 kills and a career high-tying 18 digs, while Julia Anderson added a double-double of her own with 50 assists and 12 digs. Ariel Shonk made a match-high 24 digs on the night, while Taylor Hollingsworth set her season-high with 18 digs. Alex Swann contributed nine kills during the victory while Lauren Talley chipped in eight, as UD hit .215 for the evening.
Sydney Busa paced Elon with 16 kills, while Kam Terry added 13 and Ebony Scott contributed 11. Sydel Curry handed out 47 assists while five Phoenix players reached double figure digs, including Kayla Agae with a team-high 21.
Delaware led for the entire first set until Elon finally pulled even at 24-24, but the Blue Hens responded with kills from Swann and Bryant to take the early lead. However Elon snapped a 24-24 deadlock with two straight points to capture the second set, and the Phoenix used a 10-2 spurt midway through the third frame to surge in front two sets to one.
But after Delaware led by just a point at 8-7 in the fourth frame, the Blue Hens dominated the rest of the way. UD won 16 of the next 20 points before eventually taking the frame by 12 points, and jumped out to a commanding 11-2 edge in the deciding set. Elon eventually closed within 13-7, but a kill by Bryant and a Phoenix attack error gave the Blue Hens the match.
Delaware is right back in action on Sunday when the Blue Hens host William & Mary at 1 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
