WILLIAMSBURG ,Va. – Junior Dani Laguna (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jorge Manrique) had a career game in a Delaware uniform Saturday night as the Blue Hens defeated William & Mary, 3-1, at Martin Field to clinch the No. 3 seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament.
Laguna, who has slowly returned to the pitch after missing four games from Oct. 10-20 with an injury, notched two goals, including the game-winner in the 77th minute.
With the win, Delaware finishes the regular season with an overall record of 9-6-3 while going 5-2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tribe wraps its year with a mark of 7-8-2 and 2-6 in the league.
W&M posted the first goal of the game in the fourth minute, but the Hens rallied to score three unanswered tallies for the victory.
Senior Joe Dipre (Betchworth, England/London Freemen's School) notched his third goal of the season in the 38th minute while Laguna scored back-to-back goals in the 77th and 84th minutes, respectively.
Sophomore Ryan Talbot (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and junior Marco Siverio (El Rosario, Spain/Colegio Hispano Británico) added the assists on both of Laguna's goals while junior Thomas de Villardi (Vincennes, France/Lycee Notre-dame Guingamp) registered his team-best seventh assist of the year on Dipre's goal.
Redshirt freshman Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) collected six saves in the first half while freshman Blai Palmí (Moixent, Spain/IES Dr. Lluís Simarro) took over in the second, posted three saves and earned his third win of the year.
“This was a well-fought game in which it took a little time to establish ourselves against a very competitive William & Mary team. They are currently ahead of us in the RPI and for them not to make the CAA Tournament gives testament to how strong this conference is. Our lads are thrilled to be able to host again this year. We've had fabulous support in play off games these past few years and Grant Stadium has always been a special place for us to play. We hope the student body and general public can come support us and create a great atmosphere for the playoff game.”
