MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Junior Guillermo Delgado (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) and junior Jaime Martinez (Madrid, Spain/American School of Madrid) guided Delaware Wednesday evening as the Blue Hens defeated the College of Charleston, 2-0, at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Hens snapped a five-game winless streak and grabbed their first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season to improve to 4-5-2 overall and 1-1 in league action.
Delgado notched his 32nd career goal in the 19th minute as he took a pass from Martinez and gave Delaware the 1-0 advantage.
Martinez posted the second and final goal of the night in the 50th minute off a penalty kick.
Redshirt freshman Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) continues to impress in goal for UD with a season-best eight saves.
Adan Noel tallied 10 shots on the night, including five on goal, while Kevin Shields registered two saves for the Cougars (5-4-1, 2-1 CAA).
“I am very happy for our players tonight. For anyone that has seen us play recently, tonight's result won't be a surprise. They continue to grow as the season progresses in one of the top conferences in the nation and I am proud of them for that.”
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Todd Morton has allowed an average of 0.24 goals with a save percentage of .938 in 380 minutes of action.
· Guillermo Delgado is now alone in third place in school history with 72 career points.
· Delgado's 32 goals are third-most in school history and three shy of second place, currently held by John McCloskey (1975-78).
· Jaime Martinez now has 11 career goals and 33 career points.
· Delaware was outshot for the first time in a win this season by a mark of 19-8.
· The Cougars also held a 6-9 advantage in penalty corners.
· The Blue Hens are 2-0-1 all-time against Charleston.
