DOVER, Del. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team will kick off its 2015-16 regular season on Friday when the Blue Hens travel to in-state rival Delaware State for an 8 p.m. matchup with the Hornets.
Live stats will be available for the game at www.dsuhornets.com, but it will not be livestreamed.
Delaware is looking to build on its 2014-15 campaign in which the Blue Hens finished 10-20 overall, but were 9-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association to finish in sixth place. UD won nine of its final 16 games of the season, including victories in a 12-day stretch over CAA regular season co-champions Northeastern, William & Mary and UNCW. The Blue Hens then battled eventual CAA champion Northeastern in the conference quarterfinals before suffering a narrow 67-64 loss.
Delaware returns 10 of its 11 scorers from a year ago, losing only third team All-CAA selection Kyle Anderson to graduation. Anderson's production will be challenging to replace, as he averaged a team-high 14.4 points per game last season and ended his career as UD's career leader with 269 three-pointers made and ranked 13th in school history with 1,292 career points.
The Blue Hens' other four starters return including sophomore point guard Kory Holden, a CAA All-Rookie Team selection last year who was a Preseason Second Team All-CAA pick in October. Holden ranked second in the league with 5.0 assists per game last season, and was second on the Blue Hens with 12.4 points per game. He finished the year with 360 points, the second most ever by a UD freshmen.
Junior guard Cazmon Hayes, who was the only Blue Hen to start all 30 games ago, is also expected to remain in the starting lineup. Hayes ranked third on the squad and 22nd in the CAA by averaging 11.4 points per game a year ago, and reached double figures in 20 games. Sophomore Chivarsky Corbett, who joined Holden on the CAA All-Rookie Team, could also move into the starting lineup after averaging 8.8 points per contest as a freshman. Junior Devonne Pinkard, who contributed 4.1 points and 2.9 rebounds a year ago, will also challenge for a starting position on the wing.
Redshirt senior Marvin King-Davis returns to the small forward position after leading UD and ranking 11th in the CAA with 5.7 rebounds per game in 2014-15, while his 51.5 field goal percentage was second on the squad. Junior Maurice Jeffers is also back in the post for the Blue Hens, as he led the team with 145 rebounds and 28 blocks shots while shooting a team-best 57.0 percent from the field a year ago.
Junior Barnett Harris and sophomore Skye Johnson will also see significant playing time in the Delaware frontcourt, while sophomore Anthony Mosley will be the Blue Hens' backup point guard.
Delaware has dropped nine consecutive season-openers, and is looking for its first season-opening win since a 77-57 triumph over The Citadel on Nov. 18, 2005. This year will mark the third time the Blue Hens have opened a season against Delaware State, previously posting victories over the Hornets in 1994 and 1996.
Delaware leads the all-times series with Delaware State, 11-4, and has won six of the seven meetings in Dover including two straight.
