PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Blue Hen student-athletes and SAAC members Elyse Andrews and Calvin Scott, along with UD Associate AD for Student-Athlete Development/SWA Jennifer Judy, represented the University of Delaware at the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Leadership Summit on Nov. 1-2.
Andrews (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) is a senior attacker on the Blue Hen women's lacrosse team, while Scott (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) is a sophomore leftfielder on the UD baseball team.
Drexel University hosted the event, which included a female and male student-athlete from each of the CAA's 10 member institutions. The focus of the summit was to get insight on what can be done to better the student-athletes' college experience.
“The annual CAA SAAC Leadership Summit is so valuable because it brings our student-athlete leaders together to share their thoughts and ideas, and allows for terrific perspective for everyone who participates,” said Judy, Delaware's SAAC advisor.
On Sunday the participants heard from Drexel Senior Associate Athletic Director/SWA Laura White, along with Lisa Markland and Marion Mason, who are with the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society's Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Program. Their presentation focused on the prevention of relationship violence. Joining them was NCAA Associate Director of Leadership Justin Paysinger, who conducted personality assessment tests among the student-athletes.
At the end of the day the student-athletes got the chance to talk amongst each other about topics within their university and student-athlete environment.
“I think it was really important to see what other schools are doing to improve the student-athlete experience,” said Andrews, who also donates her time with the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, B+ Heroes and UDance. “We also learned a lot about our personalities, how to use this knowledge to be better leaders, and how to better interact with our teammates.”
CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager met with the student-athletes on Monday to discuss various NCAA topics before the group heard from Hofstra University's Syndi Epps, the CAA representative on the national SAAC board and a women's basketball student-athlete. Epps, along with SAAC advisors, discussed some of the efforts and issues involved in the program.
The summit concluded with a speech from Philadelphia Eagles President Don Smolenski, lunch with Drexel Athletic Director Dr. Eric Zillmer, and a thank-you presentation from the student-athletes to Yeager.
“The conference was such a unique experience to get to know other college athletes outside of the normal contexts of games,” said Andrews. “I got some really exciting, fun ideas on how to engage student-athletes and how to help build a stronger sense of community at Delaware.”
