“I am really happy that Kayla wanted to return to our program and be a part of our coaching staff,” exclaimed Martin, who is in her 20th season at the helm of the Blue Hens. “She is the fifth player to return to Delaware to coach with us and we currently have 14 former players who are coaching at the high school or collegiate level. I think it speaks volumes about the tradition we have built here at UD. Kayla brings a lot of enthusiasm and very good knowledge of our system. She wants to be a college coach and what better place to start her career than at home.”
In her new role, Miller will be responsible for the oversight of travel arrangements, practice scheduling, team managers and film exchange in addition to assisting with administrative duties.
A native of Wilmington, Del. and graduate of Ursuline Academy, Miller returns to her alma mater after spending the past year as the varsity head girl's basketball coach at St. Mark's Catholic High School and with the Delaware Valley Lady Shock AAU club. She also worked with Titus Sports Academy, Dynamic Physical Therapy, Archmere Academy, Sanford School and the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
A dedicated advocate for service and helping others, Miller has also volunteered with the Special Olympics of Delaware, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Delaware, Kay's Kamp, Ronald McDonald House and A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital amongst numerous other organizations.
On the court, Miller spent three seasons with the Blue Hens after transferring to the University of Delaware from George Washington following her freshman season. During her tenure, the Hens captured back-to-back CAA titles and a NCAA Sweet 16® appearance. She finished her career 14th in program history with 256 assists and ranked 17th nationally during her senior season with a 2.18 assist to turnover ratio.
“First of all, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the entire St. Mark's community for the overwhelming support that they gave me while serving as the head coach of the girl's varsity basketball team,” Miller remarked. “I am grateful for the relationships that I was able to establish with the players, faculty and administration. As the first school to give me a head coaching opportunity, St. Mark's will always have a special part of me. Secondly, I would like to thank Titus Sports Academy of Delaware for providing me with another opportunity to strengthen my coaching skills. Having to leave my roles in these two places is what made this decision a difficult one.”
