SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Junior Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game with nine seconds remaining, but Cayla McMorris was able to knock down an off-balance bank-shot to give Wisconsin the 54-52 decision over the Blue Hens in the first game of the San Diego State Thanksgiving Classic at Viejas Arena.
Brown finished the contest with a game-high 22 points in addition to three rebounds and two assists.
Redshirt sophomore Sadé Chatman (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) collected a team-best 10 rebounds to go along with six points and two assists while sophomore Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) earned her first start of the year and totaled three points and three blocked shots.
Delaware (2-2) trailed, 31-20, at halftime and shot just 22 percent from the field before outscoring the Badgers (2-2), 18-5, in the third quarter. The two teams battled back and forth in the final stanza with five ties and two lead changes.
Nicole Bauman guided UW with 17 points and five assists while Tessa Cichy posted 13 points and five rebounds. Michala Johnson added a double double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
“We shouldn't hang our heads, but we took too many bad shots to start the game and didn't share the ball like we should. We played our tails off after falling behind by double digits, but we need to understand that whether it's the first 30 seconds or the last 30 seconds, we have to battle the entire time. We have to settle down at the beginning of the game and play better team basketball. This group has tremendous potential, but they have to get mentally in the right frame of mind for the first quarter.”
