HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team batted Hofstra tough but ultimately dropped three hard-fought sets in a 3-0 loss to the Pride Monday night at the Mack Physical Education Center.
Hofstra won he match by set scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 as the Pride improved to 19-10 overall and 10-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Blue Hens lost their third straight contest, falling to 12-15 overall and 4-10 in league play. UD is now one game in front of William & Mary and Northeastern in the race for the sixth and final spot in next weekend's CAA Tournament.
Autumn Jenkins blasted a team-high eight kills to lead the Delaware attack, while Katie Hillman added six kills and a team-high 16 digs. Alexa Swann also contributed six kills and led all players with eight blocks on the night, while Julia Anderson handed out 24 assists for the Blue Hens.
Veronika Kostova paced Hofstra with 13 kills while Leticia Valente added 12 for the Pride, which posted a .215 hitting percentage in the victory. Hannah Klemm dished out 48 assists during the match, while Corrina Delgadillo posted 27 digs.
Delaware used an early 9-2 run to take a three-point lead in the opening set, while a Hillman kill knotted the frame at 13-13. However Hofstra took the next three points and led the rest of the way, as a kill by Michela Rucil eventually put the set away for the Pride.
The Blue Hens trailed 8-4 early in the second frame but quickly reeled off seven consecutive points, including three straight service aces by Swann, to surge in front 11-8. The teams went back and forth from there, but after the set was tied at 22-22, Hofstra captured the next three points to take a two-set cushion.
UD found itself in a 13-8 hole midway through the third stanza, but rallied to win eight of the next 10 points to take a 16-15 edge. The set, which featured 13 ties and seven lead changes, was tight the rest of the way, but Kostova sealed the match for the Pride with her final kill of the evening.
