BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Senior Amira Idris (Hylton/Woodbridge, Va.) won both the long jump and triple jump events and freshman Sarah Hillman (Polytech/Dover, Del.) captured the shot put event to lead the University of Delaware women's indoor track & field team at the John Covert Classic Saturday at Lehigh University's Rauch Field House.
Delaware, competing as a split squad with other team members taking part in the Armory Invitational in New York, enjoyed a solid team performance as the Hens collected three first place finishes and 15 top five showings.
“We had a productive day at both meets,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “I was pleased to see how the ladies meet the challenges of the day to achieve more personal best performances. I look forward to seeing more athletes performing to meet the ECAC standards as we prepare for better results towards the end of the indoor season.”
Idris was a double winner as she posted a first place finish in the long jump with a career best leap of 18-10 and then captured the triple jump event with a distance of 39-0.25. Her leap the long jump qualified her for the ECAC Championships in March at Boston University.
Hillman won her second individual title of the season as she won the shot put with a career-best toss of 45-7, good enough to qualify for the ECAC meet and set a UD freshman record. She surpassed the previous UD rookie mark of 44-4 set by Alana Pantale in 2011. Hillman also placed fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 45-1.75.
Also for the Hens, Alexis Gligor was third in the pole vault (11-1.75), Maddie Berman was third in the 3,000 meters (10:40.63), Kelsey Evancho was fourth in the high jump (5-5), Irene Cedano was fourth in the weight throw (46-2.25) and fifth in the shot put (37-6.5), Katrina Steenkamer was fourth in the mile (5:26.78), and Leslie Ope was fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.20).
Delaware will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Frank Coldren Classic at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa.
