INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Allstate Insurance Company announced today that University of Delaware senior Stephanie Leon (Northport, N.Y./Northport) was one of five NCAA Division I women's basketball players named to the 2015 Allstate Good Works Team®.
The prestigious award, in its third season, pays tribute to college basketball players at all levels for their impressive commitment to giving back to their communities and positively impacting the lives of those around them.
"I am honored to have been recognized for the work I have been doing in my community and to be named to the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team®," exclaimed Leon. "I am excited to have the opportunity to represent the University of Delaware at the Final Four in Tampa this year and to be apart of such a distinguished group."
A two-time team captain, Leon has committed her invaluable free time to volunteering with more than 10 community organizations ranging from elementary schools to churches and environmental agencies during her four years at UD.
A trueborn leader, Leon was honored last March as the first Blue Hen to earn the Colonial Athletic Association Dean Ehlers Leadership Award, which recognizes the highest standards of leadership, integrity and sportsmanship in conjunction with academic athletic achievement.
Leon also recently accepted a position with Teach For America, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to eliminate educational inequity by enlisting high-achieving recent college graduates and professionals to teach.
From a record 93 nominees, distinguished voting panels comprised of former coaches, college basketball legends and media members selected the 10-member team, which is comprised of five NCAA Division I level student-athletes and five student-athletes from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA.
Leading the voting panel for the WBCA squad was basketball star and University of Tennessee legend Tamika Catchings.
“The WBCA is extremely excited to continue its partnership with Allstate in showing appreciation for
these student-athletes who take time to invest in and further their respective communities,” stated WBCA executive director Danielle Donehew. “Congratulations to these outstanding student-athletes who have helped make a difference and will continue to be leaders on and off the basketball court.”
Members of the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team® will be recognized during the 2015 WBCA Convention and at the 2015 NCAA Women's Final Four® in Tampa Bay, and will also participate in a local community project.
The four other Division I WBCA Good Works Team® honorees include Kyndal Clark (Drake), Alex Cohen (Northwestern), Bria Gross (Kentucky) and Devon Roeper (Columbia).
