RICHMOND, Va. -- The University of Delaware swept the first weekly Colonial Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse honors of the year Tuesday as Tom Holland was selected as the CAA Player of the Week and Matt Olbrich was honored as the Rookie of the Week.
Both played a key role in Delaware's thrilling 12-11 comeback victory over Bucknell in the home opener Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium. The Hens trailed 5-0 after the first quarter and 7-3
at halftime before outscoring the Bison 3-0 in the final stanza to claim the victory.
Delaware (1-1) will continue play this Sunday when the Hens travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on Ohio State (
Holland (at right), an attackman from Baltimore, Md. (Calvert Hall High School), scored six goals and scooped up five ground balls over two games, which included a season-opening 15-10 loss to High Point in the season opener Feb. 1. He posted two goals and three groundballs at High Point and followed that up with a four-goal effort in the comeback win over Bucknell.
Holland, whose four -goal effort was short of his career-high, tied the game in the third quarter and then tallied the game-winner in the fourth quarter with just 4:09 left to play to break an 11-11 deadlock.
Olbrich, a redshirt freshman from Moorestown, N.J. (Moorestown HS), was solid in his first two games, winning 17 faceoffs to go along with eight groundballs and a goal.
Against Bucknell, Olbrich replaced All-American candidate Tyler Barbarich for the Hens and won 13 of 19 attempts. With the score knotted at 8-8 in the third quarter, Olbrich scored his first collegiate goal to give the Blue Hens their first lead of the day.
