CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The University of Delaware softball team defeated Toledo, 8-0 in five innings, before falling to the host Buccaneers 6-2 as the Blue Hens opened their 2015 season Friday afternoon at the Charleston Southern Tournament.
Blue Hen sophomore Carolyn Szymanski fired a two-hit shutout and blasted a three-run homer in the opening victory over the Rockets (2-5). Szymanski allowed just two singles while tossing the fourth shutout of her career, and hit her fifth career homer in the bottom of the third inning. Jessica Grisler opened the bottom of the first with a leadoff home run, while Mariah Kondravy doubled home Giovanna Kolofer later in the frame to put the Blue Hens up a pair.
Shelby Jones led off the bottom of the second with a longball, before Szymanski's homer in the third made it a 6-0 game. Kondravy doubled home Kolofer in the fourth before crossing the plate on a Szymanski two-bagger to close the scoring.
Kondravy was 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles during her UD debut while Grisler, Szymanski and Leanna Gearhart added two hits apiece.
In Delaware's second game of the day, Charleston Southern (4-1) scored twice in the bottom of the first due to a pair of Blue Hen errors and a bases loaded double by Cheyenne Gandara. UD got a run back in the second when Kondravy led off with a single and eventually scored on an RBI single by Jones, but the Buccaneers got the run right back in the bottom of the frame.
The Blue Hens again pulled within a run in the fifth as Gearhart singled home pinch runner Mattie Nuccio, but Charleston Southern answered with three in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.
Heather Oakley ripped a pair of doubles for Delaware, while Jordan Cargile took the loss in the circle after allowing three runs in three innings during her Blue Hen debut.
Delaware faces Howard at 9 a.m. and Charleston Southern at 1 p.m. on Saturday during the second day of the tournament.
