WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team took charge in the second half en route to a 61-56 win at William & Mary Friday evening.
Delaware avenged a January 18 loss to the Tribe in which W&M nearly tripled UD's second half points en route to a 59-48 comeback victory at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Friday's victory was the fifth straight for the Blue Hens, who improve to 13-11 overall and 8-5 in the Colonial Athletic Conference.
Sophomore Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J./Paterson Kennedy) scored 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field.
Junior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) added 10 points while sophomore Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) and freshman Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) each posted nine points apiece. Nicholas collected a game-best 12 rebounds.
Senior Stephanie Leon (Northport, N.Y./Northport) tied career records with nine rebounds and five blocked shots.
Marlena Tremba led the Tribe (11-13, 5-8 CAA) with 19 points while Kyla Kerstetter posted 14 points. Jazmen Boone and Abby Rendle each tallied eight rebounds apiece for W&M.
“We battled and found a way to get the win. This is a huge win, I knew it was going to be a nail-biter as William & Mary has been playing very well and their shooters have come to life. This was a gritty performance by our kids and a great win on the road. I think we've really grown up in the past few weeks. We've won five straight and that certainly wouldn't have happened in the beginning of the year. Kids have stepped up and come to play.”
Senior Stephanie Leon
“It was huge to finish the first half strong. It was a confidence boost being able to go into the lockerroom at halftime with a lead after not scoring for a long period of time.”
[On seeing more playing time]: “I'm becoming more comfortable and confident being able to play this much and being able to get into the rhythm of what this team is doing. I've been able to take what I'm seeing on the bench and reacting with that on the floor.”
Sophomore Erika Brown
“We definitely blew the game against them at home. We let them come all the way back and win on our home court, which should never happen. We knew this was going to be a harder game on the road and they've been playing better. I'm glad we got it done. I think we got some really big rebounds and our backline really stepped up. In the second half, we played good defense and on offense we were able to score.”
