HARRISONBURG, Va. – The James Madison University women's basketball team opened play against the University of Delaware with an 18-0 run Sunday afternoon and the Blue Hens were never able to recover in a 94-64 loss to the Dukes at the Convocation Center.
Delaware (13-12, 8-6 Colonial Athletic Association) was able to cut the deficit to six before JMU eventually went up by as much as 23 before the end of the half.
The league-leading Dukes (22-2, 13-0 CAA), who are earning votes in the national Top 25 polls, quickly took the 41-22 halftime lead and turned it into a 30-plus-point advantage to open the second. JMU led by as much 38 en route to victory.
Junior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) and sophomore Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) led the Hens with 15 points apiece.
Sophomore Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J./Paterson Kennedy) and senior Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Jardine and freshman Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) paced Delaware with eight rebounds each.
Precious Hall posted game-high 23 points while Lauren Okafor contributed a double double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.
“With a team as good as JMU, you cannot spot them a large lead and then expect to get back into it. It was an uphill battle all day today, you have to give JMU credit for that. I knew coming in with this type of crowd that it would be a handful for our players. It's unfortunate because we've had great games here that have been absolute battles. This set of players is not ready for that, they don't have the right mindset coming into an atmosphere like this.”
Sophomore Erika Brown
“The season isn't over. This is not time to hang our heads. We were playing well for the past month or so and now we just played one bad game. We have to get right back at it and do the things we've been doing. Today we went back to the team we were in the beginning of the year and not the team we've been recently.”
