WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team built a 15-point halftime lead and held off William & Mary down the stretch as the Blue Hens posted their second consecutive impressive road victory with a 73-70 triumph over the Tribe Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Arena.
Delaware (7-18, 6-8 CAA) defeated William & Mary for the ninth consecutive meeting while snapping William & Mary's 14-game home winning streak.
The Tribe (16-9, 10-4) entered the game having won all 11 contests at Kaplan Arena this year, but lost for the fourth straight time in Williamsburg to the Blue Hens.
Kory Holden, Kyle Anderson and Cazmon Hayes each scored 15 points for a balanced Blue Hen effort as Delaware shot 50.9 percent from the field. Maurice Jeffers was the fourth Delaware player in double figures with 10 points while Chivarsky Corbett grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.
Marcus Thornton scored 27 points for William & Mary, and is now just one shy of the 2,000-point mark for his career. Omar Prewitt added 25 points for the Tribe, while Terry Tarpey contributed nine points and eight rebounds.
Delaware went 17 of 29 from the field in the opening 20 minutes while taking a 43-28 halftime lead, but the Tribe quickly got back into the game with an early 11-2 run in the second stanza. The Blue Hens went back up eight, before William & Mary scored eight consecutive points to pull even at 55-55.
The game was still tied at 62-62, but Anderson hit a tough baseline jumper and Holden scored inside to put the Blue Hens in front for good. Holden added a free throw with nine seconds to play to make it a three-point game, before Thornton's last second three-pointer was short.
“I love my guys, and we told them they needed to be a tougher team in the second half,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “We knew we would have to withstand their run, and I'm very pleased with our calmness and lack of panic. Our team has the abilities and skills to get the job done, and we did that today.”
UD opened the game in impressive fashion, as consecutive three-pointers by Hayes and Corbett gave the Blue Hens a 20-9 lead seven minutes into the contest.
The Blue Hens eventually went up as much as 15, and after the Tribe pulled within eight, UD closed the half with a 9-2 spurt to take a 43-28 advantage at the break.
“We got a big win today, and we don't plan on taking any more steps back,” Anderson said. “We plan on finishing the season strong.”
Delaware returns home on Thursday to host UNCW at 7 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
