CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The University of Delaware softball team pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of eight Howard errors as the Blue Hens concluded play at the Charleston Southern Tournament with a 13-6 victory Sunday afternoon.
Delaware (4-1), which defeated Howard for the second consecutive day, jumped in front during the top of the first when Jessica Grisler scored on an RBI groundout by Leanna Gearhart. Grisler then tripled home Cailey Isaacs in the third inning, before Grisler and Emily Sanchez each crossed the plate when Sarah Bencivenga reached on an error. Mariah Kondravy then blasted a two-run homer to center, the first longball of her Blue Hen career, to extend the lead to 6-0.
But Howard (1-6) would get right back in the contest by scoring five runs of its own in the bottom of the third. Janessa Flynn knocked home two runs with a double, before Rejanae Brooks delivered an RBI single to cap the rally and pull the Bison within a run.
However the Blue Hens answered right back in the top of the fourth, extending the lead back to five at 10-5. Danielle Wissinger ignited the rally with a double, and she immediately came around to score on a Grisler single. After Grisler scored on an error, Gearhart knocked home a run with a triple and then crossed the plate herself on a groundout by Bencivenga.
After the Bison pushed across one run in the bottom of the fourth, Delaware closed the scoring by tacking on three more unearned runs in the seventh. Hannah George and Grisler each scored on an error, before Sanchez crossed the plate on a groundout by Gearhart.
Carolyn Szymanski improved to 3-0 as she allowed six runs, just one earned, on four hits in four innings of work, while Jordan Cargile earned her second save after firing three perfect innings of relief. Grisler finished 3 for 4 at the plate and tied the school record by scoring four runs, while Wissinger also had three hits and Gearhart drove home three.
