NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball has added transfer Madison Steppe, a pitcher from Hofstra, to its roster for the 2027 season.Â
"Madison is the type of person you want in your program," head coach Jen Steele said. "On the field, she's a proven competitor who won 13 games as a freshman and has the power arsenal to impact games in a lot of different ways. Her ability to spin the ball and work at the top of the zone will be a great addition to our pitching staff. More importantly, she's a high-character person who will make our culture better from day one, and we're thrilled to welcome her to Delaware."
Steppe played one season for The Pride, helping Hofstra to a CAA North Division Championship and a CAA Tournament Championship Game appearance. She went 14-6 as a freshman, throwing 124 innings with a 3.67 ERA while striking out 97 and holding opponents to a .232 BAA. Steppe was even better in league play, going 9-0 with a 2.63 ERA. In the CAA Tournament, she pitched seven innings and allowed just two earned runs. Steppe was an All-Rookie selection and a two-time CAA Pitcher of the Week honoree. She ranked in the top 10 in the conference in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, and BAA.
From Charlottesville, Va., Steppe played at Monticello High School and was named District and Central Virginia Player of the Year as a senior. She was also a three-time All-District selection and a two-time First Team All-Region honoree. For her career, she recorded 557 strikeouts in 293 innings pitched, including a career-high 217 strikeouts in 116 innings as a junior. As a sophomore, she led the state with a 0.60 ERA. She helped the Mustangs to a district championship as a senior.
Steppe is Delaware's first official transfer addition of the 2026 offseason. The Blue Hens have had notable success navigating the transfer portal in recent years, having brought in former CAA Pitcher of the Year and All-Region selection Billie Kerwood, two-time All-Region honoree Morgan Hess, CAA Defensive Player of the Year and All-Region selection Mary Beth Cahalan, CAA Defensive Player of the Year Kiara Mills, All-Region selections Julia Boyet, and All-Region selection and 2023 ERA leader Taylor Wroten.Â
UD ended the season at 31-24 and 17-10 in conference play in its inaugural CUSA season. Delaware has won at least 30 games in three consecutive seasons for the first time in program history.
