MONROE, La. -- The University of Delaware softball team dropped a doubleheader to Louisiana-Monroe, 7-5 and 11-3, Friday afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex.
Orginally scheduled to play five games at the Central Arkansas Tournament this week, the schedule was changed due to cold temperatures and rain expected in the Conway, Ark. area. Delaware did not schedule the doubleheader with ULM until Thursday.
The Warhawks (11-2) scored a run during the bottom of the first of the opener, before adding two in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 4-0 advantage. However Delaware (4-3) would answer back in the top of the sixth inning, pushing across five runs to take the lead.
Cailey Isaacs and Jessica Grisler each doubled before Emily Sanchez legged out a bunt single to load the bases, and one out later Sarah Bencivenga put the Blue Hens on the board with an RBI single. Mariah Kondravy then singled home two more runs, and following a ULM pitching change, Carolyn Szymanski delivered a run-scoring infield single to knot the contest at 4-4. After a Heather Oakley single loaded the bases, Danielle Wissinger flied out to left, while Mattie Nuccio scored on an error by Warhawks catcher Amye Barre on the throw to the plate as UD went in front.
However the Warhawks answered right back in the bottom half of the frame, as an RBI single by Miyuki Navarrete tied the game before Alexis Cacioppo tripled home two more to account for the final margin.
Oakley finished 2 for 3 with a double for the Blue Hens, while Szymanski picked up her first loss of the campaign and fell to 3-1 after she gave up six runs, one earned, in five innings of work.
ULM wasted little time in taking control of the nightcap, pushing across five runs in the bottom of the first inning off Blue Hen starter Kennedy Lester. Delaware got a run back in the top of the third when Isaacs belted a solo homer to centerfield, but the Warhawks went back up by five in the bottom half on an RBI single by Cheyanne Lyon.
Wissinger drilled a two-run homer in the top of the fourth, before ULM put the game away with five more runs in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game due to the mercy rule.
Lester allowed five runs, three earned, in a third of an inning, to fall to 1-1 on the year, while Cargile was charged with six runs in 4.1 frames of relief.
