NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware Athletics will be hosting a special group of heroes this Sunday, March 1, when the Blue Hen women's basketball team takes on James Madison in the final home game of the season.
Delaware will host the inaugural B+ (Positive) Hero Day at the Bob Carpenter Center when the Blue Hens take on the Dukes at 2 p.m.
The Blue Hens hope to raise awareness for The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, which benefits children battling cancer and their families. The foundation believes that every child who has battled cancer -- or is still in the fight – is a hero. They honor each child (and their siblings) with a B+ Hero medal, and when the Heroes are feeling well enough, they are invited to participate in a number of B+ events and are paired with an adopted family.
UD Athletics is proud to have several teams that have adopted B+ Heroes and to have touched the lives of the B+ community over the years, including women's basketball.
All B+ Heroes and their families within the State of Delaware are invited to register in advance by Wednesday, Feb. 25 to receive free admission to the game, and participate in the halftime programming. Invitations have been sent, but those who have not received notice can email BlueHensMarketing@udel.edu before the registration deadline.
At halftime of the game, a B+ Heroes Parade will be held. Join us in support of a special on-court halftime recognition of B+ Heroes along with their families.
Fans are encouraged to wear Delaware Gold to the game in support of childhood cancer. Like other forms of cancer, childhood cancer has an international symbol, the gold ribbon. Go Gold is a way that a school or workplace can join in the fight to beat childhood cancer and provide hope to those who need it most.
In addition, fans attending the game are encouraged to take part and “Do Good” on Sunday by bringing one of the following for the “Do Good” collection: VISA Gift Cards, Exxon/Shell Gas Cards, Walmart Gift Cards, and Target Gift Cards.
The donations will help the B+ Foundation in its goal of providing financial support to families of critically ill children. To date they have helped thousands of families nationwide with over $1 million in assistance in the last two years.
Tickets to the game are on sale for as low as $5. Contact the Delaware Ticket Office in-person, by phone (302-831-2257), or online at (www.bluehens.com) to purchase tickets or for more information.
The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation honors the memory of Andrew, a 14-year-old athlete and 'A' student from Wilmington, Del., who was diagnosed with Leukemia and fought for 167 days before passing away on July 14, 2007. Throughout his illness, Andrew inspired thousands of friends and families with his courageous fight.
