WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The University of Delaware softball team will again travel south this weekend as the Blue Hens are scheduled to play five games at the Seahawk Softball Spring Classic hosted by UNCW.
Delaware had been scheduled to participate in the Norfolk State Spartan Clash, but due to expected inclement weather in the Norfolk area, the Blue Hens will now head to UNCW's Boseman Field.
Delaware will take on Marist on Friday at 10 a.m., before facing Western Carolina at 5:30 p.m. that day. The Blue Hens battle North Carolina A&T at 9:30 a.m. and Western Carolina at 5 p.m. on Saturday, before wrapping up play with a third game against the Catamounts on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
Live stats for every game will be available at www.uncwstats.com.
Delaware enters the invitational with a 5-5 record, having dropped four of five games during last weekend's hectic schedule. Senior rightfielder Jessica Grisler leads the Blue Hens with a .472 batting average, 17 hits and 12 runs scored, while freshman Mariah Kondravy is hitting .406 with team-highs of four doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI.
Heather Oakley carries a .333 average into the weekend, while Sarah Bencivenga is hitting .323 with 10 hits and 10 runs scored. Carolyn Szymanski is 4-2 with a 3.28 earned run average to pace the UD pitching staff, while Jordan Cargile has already picked up three saves.
Marist split four games while opening its season at the Citrus Classic last weekend in Orlando, defeating Virginia and Campbell while falling to George Washington and Arkansas. Maureen Duddy was named the MAAC Player of the Week after hitting .417 during the invitational, while Jayne Oberdorf was selected the league's Pitcher of the Week after compiling a 1.56 earned run average in two appearances.
Western Carolina is just 1-2 on the season heading into the Catamounts' game with South Carolina on Thursday afternoon. Victoria Mariscal is hitting .333 with two home runs and five RBI for WCU, while Jordan Garrett has allowed just one unearned run in 11 innings of work in the circle.
North Carolina A&T is 3-5 this year after dropping all four games at the Charleston Southern Tournament last weekend. Alejandra Barcenas paces the Aggies with nine hits, three homers and 10 RBI, while Malven McKnight is 2-3 with a 5.00 ERA to lead the pitching staff.
