ELKTON, Md. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team returned to the court Saturday evening following a two-week hiatus and fell to UMBC, 5-2, at the Elkton Indoor Tennis.
UMBC (3-5) went 3-0 in the doubles match to take hold of the team doubles point going into singles play.
Freshman Arielle Shuren (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) collected her second straight win of the season for Delaware (3-2) with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Madlena Kurasz in the top flight.
Sophomore Denny LaMachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) tallied the Hens' lone other singles win of the day after defeating Laura Ambrozic, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 11-9 in the No. 5 spot.
“We had some lows and some highs, but overall it was a pretty steady performance. UMBC is a strong team and they played well when they needed to today. While a loss like this stings, it will help us down the road because it's still early in the season.”
