NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team won its fourth straight game Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens defeated UNCW, 69-60, behind a career day from sophomore Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Jardine opened the first 10 minutes of play with 13 points by going 5-for-5 from the field in addition to 2-of-2 from the charity stipe. The forward finished the day with a career-best 27 points off 10-for-14 shooting with three 3-pointers. She bested her previous high of 18 points collected against Northern Kentucky on Dec. 19.
Jardine also recorded her sixth double double of the season with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Junior Courtni Green (at right; Winchester, Va./Millbrook) joined Jardine in double figures with 16 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists.
With the win, Delaware improves to 12-11 on the year and 7-5 in Colonial Athletic Association action.
Naqaiyyah Teague posted 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Seahawks, who fall to 8-14 overall and 4-7 in the CAA.
“Once we got ourselves righted after the first few minutes, we got into our groove and managed to secure a double-digit lead going into the second half. Overall, we played very well. We attacked their pressure and did the things we needed to do to have a good showing.”
[On Hannah Jardine]: “Right now, Hannah has a lot of confidence. She's been attacking, shooting the ball very well and going to the rim when the opportunity presents itself. It's great to see a sophomore really grow up and mature before your own eyes. Hannah has a great work ethic and it's great to see her continue to improve."
Junior Courtni Green
“When anyone can put up big numbers, I think that shows how good of a team we are. It's also very important because the opposing team has to play everybody straight up. We don't just have one weapon on the court.”
Sophomore Hannah Jardine (at left)
“When we came out today, we were determined to have a good team win and I was just really motivated to help as much as possible. Whenever you knock down the first couple, it gives you a bit more confidence. Last year, I think I grew as a player as the year went on and this year, I feel a lot more comfortable shooting the three and some harder shots.”
