Delaware Wraps Up Seahawk Classic With 7-0 Shutout of Western Carolina

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Jessica Grisler recorded two hits while Carolyn Szymanski and Jordan Cargile combined on a six-hit shutout as the University of Delaware softball team concluded action at the Seahawk Softball Spring Classic with a 7-0 victory over Western Carolina Sunday morning at Boseman Field.
The Blue Hens, who won four of five games at the invitational, improved to 9-6 on the campaign. Western Carolina, which dropped two of three contests to Delaware over the weekend, fell to 3-6 on the year.
UD jumped in front during the top of the second inning as after Giovanna Kolofer singled and Leanna Gearhart walked, Grisler drove both runners home with a two-run double to rightfield. Mariah Kondravy then laced a two-out double to left in the third, before coming around to score on a single to center by Szymanski.
Delaware then tacked on four runs in the fifth without the benefit of a base hit. After three walks loaded the bases with two out, Danielle Wissinger was hit by a pitch to force home Sarah Bencivenga. Gearhart then reached on an error by Catamounts second baseman Crystal Cyr while the return throw by WCU rightfielder Victoria Mariscal was off the mark, allowing all three Blue Hen runners to cross the plate.
That would be plenty of support for Szymanski, who improved to 6-3 after allowing four hits and striking out four in five innings of scoreless ball. Cargile scattered two hits during the final two frames to secure the Delaware victory. Jordan Garrett, who allowed three runs in four innings of work, dropped to 2-3 for the Catamounts.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Grisler now has 198 career hits, seven shy of the UD record
• Grisler has hit safely in eight consecutive games and in 14 of UD's 15 contests
• Kolofer scored two runs for Delaware
• Kondravy now has six doubles this year, tied for the team lead with Grisler
• The shutout was the second of the year for the Blue Hens
• UD and WCU had only faced each other twice prior to playing three times this weekend
