Caracciolo Tallies 29 in 74-71 Loss to JMU on Senior Day
3/1/2015 5:04:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NEWARK, Del. – Senior Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) had a career day for the second consecutive game Sunday afternoon, but the University of Delaware women's basketball team was unable to finish off #rv James Madison as the Blue Hens fell, 74-71, to the Dukes.
Caracciolo, who registered 26 points on Thursday at UNCW, tallied game-highs of 29 points and 10 rebounds for Delaware (13-15, 8-9 Colonial Athletic Association). She added two blocks, two assists and two steals in 36 minutes of action.
Sophomore Erika Brown (at left; Haledon, N.J/Paterson Kennedy) contributed 18 points, two rebounds and two assists while classmate Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) picked up 14 points, including four 3-point baskets.
The Blue Hens led for the majority of the game, but defending Colonial Athletic Association champion JMU took the lead in the final six minutes and held on for the victory.
Delaware had a final chance at the buzzer, but a 3-pointer from Jardine was off the mark as time expired.
Precious Hall guided the Dukes (25-3, 16-1 CAA) with 24 points while Jazmon Gwathmey collected 21 points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots. Angela Mickens dished out a game-high nine assists for JMU.
James Madison, which is receiving votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls, has won two straight and 16 of its last 17 games.
Tina Martin“I thought today we really focused in for forty minutes and went after it. We've got one more game left and then the CAA tournament. I'm hoping we can build on today's focus. Today they brought the right mental approach to put together a full game. For the bigger picture, this shows our team that we can compete with anyone in this league when you follow the game plan.”
Senior Joy Caracciolo
“Obviously we really wanted to get the win, but we can't put our heads down. We battled with them the whole time and we know we can hang with a difficult opponent. One of our key priorities in the game was to just attack them and not settle. We've really worked on executing and getting the ball into the post during practice and I've been working with the coaches to make sure I take my time and get it up there.”
Sophomore Hannah Jardine
(at right)
“We were disappointed that we didn't get the win, but I think that's the hardest that we've played all year, both defensively and offensively. We're definitely taking positive things away from today.”
[On the last play of the game]: “We didn't quite get all the looks in the last possession when we had an opportunity. We were trying to run a couple of different screens and we just waited too long and couldn't find open looks.”
