ELON, N.C. – For the fourth straight game, the University of Delaware women's basketball team held a halftime lead, but was unable to finish the game on top as the Blue Hens dropped a 77-76 decision in overtime Wednesday evening.
With 12 seconds remaining in regulation, junior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) tied the game at 67-67 with a left-handed layup coming out of a Delaware timeout.
Elon was able to get back down the court, but missed a layup of its own. Blue Hen sophomore Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J/Paterson Kennedy) was unable to provide the game-winning heroics by missing a basket for UD as time expired.
The two teams exchanged points throughout the first three minutes of the extra period until Shay Burnett knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Phoenix a 76-73 advantage with 1:40 remaining. Burnett then gave her team four-point lead by making 1-of-2 shots from the charity stripe.
With less than a minute remaining, Brown was able to complete a three-point play to cut Delaware's deficit to 77-76. The Blue Hens had two final opportunities with two seconds remaining as UD missed a trey and was unable to convert on the offensive rebound.
Senior Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) led all scorers with 21 points to go along with seven rebounds. Green added 18 points while Brown contributed 16 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists.
With the loss, Delaware completes regular season action with a mark of 13-16 while going 8-10 in Colonial Athletic Association play. With an 8-10 league record, the Blue Hens will be seeded seventh in the upcoming CAA Tournament.
Elon impoves to 18-11 overall and 11-7 in its inaugural season in the CAA. Burnett led the Phoenix with 19 points, five assists, and five rebounds while Sam Coffer collected 10 rebounds. Elon will be the fourth seed in the CAA Tournament.
“I'm definitely disappointed. Disappointed for the kids, disappointed for everybody. We played our butts off tonight. It's frustrating when you have a chance to build a lead and go up and you're unable to. The bottom line is, we missed too many free throws and gave up too many offensive rebounds. We're finally playing with a sense of urgency and we've turned the corner with our effort. We're playing much harder than we have all year long and I'm proud of them from that standpoint.”
