Hens Fall to In-State Rival Wilmington (Del.) 8-1

NEWARK, Del. – After a strong day at the plate Tuesday, the Blue Hen bats were unable to deliver timely hits Wednesday as Wilmington (Del.) defeated the University of Delaware 8-1 in a non-league game at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Hens threatened throughout the game, but grounded into costly double plays and could not come up with clutch hits with runners in scoring position. Delaware (4-4) registered 11 hits, but left 12 runners on base in the game.
Jim ShermanWilmington (4-5) recorded a run in the first inning and then another in the fourth before Ty Warrington put UD on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the fifth inning.
The Wildcats added to their lead with two runs in the sixth and blew the game open with a four-run eighth inning.
Zach Lopes and Norm Donkin led the team with three hits on the day, while Brock Niggebrugge scored the lone Blue Hen run.
Ron Marinaccio made his second career start Wednesday. The redshirt freshman pitched three innings and gave up one earned run on two hits and was credited with the loss.
The Blue Hens will return to action this weekend for three games in the Fordham Tournament. UD will face Sacred Heart Saturday at 3 p.m. before squaring off with the Pioneers and Fordham in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday.
HEN SCARTCHINGS:
· Christian Adorno led the Wildcats with three hits, while Sam Goines drove in two runs in the winning effort.
· Joe Giacchino and Ty Warrington tallied two hits each in Wednesday's contest.
· This is the second win in a row for Wilmington (Del.) over UD and the Wildcats have defeated the Hens in five of the last seven matchups between the schools.
· Each team used seven pitchers in Wednesday's game.
· The 8-1 win is the largest margin of victory in series history for the Wildcats.
