UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – The road to a third Colonial Athletic Association title continues for the University of Delaware women's basketball team as the Blue Hens held on for a 73-61 victory over Northeastern in Wednesday's opening round action at The Show Place Arena.
Delaware junior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) registered a team-best 22 points in addition to collecting six rebounds, five assists, and three steals in 39 minutes of play.
Senior Joy Caracciolo (below left; Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) added her eighth career double d
ouble with 13 points and 10 rebounds while sophomores Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) and Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J/Paterson Kennedy) tallied 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Delaware (14-16) led for the majority of the contest but the Huskies (4-25) threatened midway through the second half.
Northeastern tied things at 47-47 before the Hens went up by as much as 11.
UD finished the game on a 7-2 run, including five free throws, to move on to Friday's quarterfinals contest against Drexel.
Samantha DeFreese paced the Huskies with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
“Obviously we've had a tough last week and a half of conference play, so it feels really good to win. The kids really stepped up and came in with the right mindset to survive and move on. I'm proud of the kids, they did a really nice job in the second half defensively and then we were able to attack the basket.”
Sophomore Erika Brown
“I think we came here really confident because even though we lost our last few games, we played very tough teams very close. Things started a little slow for us but after the half we picked it up and showed what we can do.”
