Blue Hens Fall to Villanova, 7-2, at Delaware Invitational

NEWARK, Del. -- The Blue Hen softball team dropped a 7-2 decision to Villanova Sunday afternoon on the second day of the University of Delaware Spring Invitational.
The Wildcats, who improved to 7-10 on the season, opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as Tianah Hathaway scored when Blue Hen leftfielder Cailey Isaacs dropped a flyball hit by Brittany Husk. Later in the frame Lauren Herschberg scored on a wild pitch, before Chase Snell drove home a run with an infield single to put Villanova in front 3-0.
Delaware, which dropped to 10-7 on the year, got a pair of runs right back in the bottom half. Jessica Grisler led off with a single to center, and after Lisa Stacevicz singled to right, both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Bencivenga.
One out later Mariah Kondravy lined a shot to the base of the centerfield fence, driving home a pair to bring the Blue Hens within one.
However Villanova put up another three runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by an RBI triple by Hathaway and a run-scoring double by Herschberg.
The Wildcats then tacked on an unearned run in the fifth to conclude the scoring.
Kate Poppe picked up a complete game victory in the circle for Villanova, while Blue Hen starter Carolyn Szymanski dropped to 6-4 after allowing three runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Delaware is back home on Monday to host Cornell in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at the UD Softball Stadium.

• Delaware had won five of its previous six games prior to Sunday's loss
• Grisler now has 201 career hits, four shy of the UD record
• Kondravy finished 2 for 4, while seven Blue Hens added one hit
• Kondravy now has team-highs of eight doubles and seven multi-RBI games
• Kelly Lupton (above) made her season debut in the circle, allowing one unearned run in three innings
• Villanova has won 11 straight over Delaware since the start of the 2010 season
