NEWARK, Del. -- Lisa Stacevicz blasted a home run to cap a four-run Blue Hen comeback in the nightcap as the University of Delaware softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Cornell Monday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
Delaware, which is now 11-8 on the season, dropped the opener 5-2 before rallying for a 5-4 triumph in the second game of the day.
Cornell, now 2-7 on the year, scored an unearned run in the top of the first during the opener, before Cailey Isaacs doubled home Alyshia Dellatore in the bottom of the second to pull the Blue Hens even. However the Big Red scored twice in the top of the fifth on a dropped flyball by UD centerfielder Sarah Bencivenga, before tacking on two insurance runs in the seventh.
Stacevicz laced a double to chase home Leanna Gearhart and the Blue Hens eventually brought the tying run to the plate during a seventh inning rally, but Cornell pitcher Maddie Orcutt struck out Heather Oakley to end the game.
The Big Red then jumped in front during the nightcap, scoring three times in the first and adding a run in the second to go up 4-0. However Delaware answered in the bottom of the second, as Danielle Wissinger singled home Mariah Kondravy before Morgan Schroll scored on a double steal to bring the Blue Hens within two.
Gearhart then ripped a two-run triple to rightfield in the fourth to knot the contest, before Stacevicz drilled a solo homer in the fifth to give Delaware its first lead of the day. Carolyn Szymanski then retired the side in order during the final two frames to secure the victory.
Stacevicz finished the day 3 for 4 with two doubles, a homer, and two RBI, while Bencivenga also had three hits on the afternoon.
The Blue Hens remain home on Wednesday to host Morgan State in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the UD Softball Stadium.
Hen Scratchings:
• Delaware's win snapped a four-game losing skid to Cornell
• Stacevicz entered the day with one extra base hit on the year before adding three Monday
• Stacevicz's home run was the fourth of her career
• Bencivenga has recorded six hits in the last four games
• Szymanski earned her team-leading seventh win of the season in the nightcap, allowing just two hits in the final five innings
