DALLAS – University of Delaware softball's Katie Scheivert has earned the Conference USA Spring Spirit of Service Award, the league announced Tuesday. The award honors student-athletes with significant community service endeavors, good academic standing, and participation in their sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the year, with Tuesday's announcement accounting for all sports with championships in the spring.
The Leesburg, Va. native concluded her career by earning Second-Team CUSA honors after hitting .345/.436/.450 with three home runs, 28 RBIs, 36 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases. Over her career, she played in and started every game, and reached milestones of 200 career hits and 100 runs scored while appearing in the second-most games of any Delaware player in program history at 211. Scheivert also ranks among the program's all-time leaders offensively, sitting in the top 15 in career batting average and on-base percentage, top 10 in doubles, and top five in stolen bases. She is the seventh player in program history to hit at least .300 in all four collegiate seasons and one of just two players to score four runs in a game twice.Â
Off the field, Scheivert served as Delaware's SAAC Vice President as a senior and played an active role in community service initiatives. She organized "Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat," collecting 1,016 pounds of food for the Food Bank of Delaware, participated in Teddy Bear Toss events at men's and women's basketball games benefiting Kind to Kids, and helped run two home run derbies supporting UDance. She was also a member of Student Government and regularly led youth softball camps and clinics to help grow the game in Delaware. For her efforts, she was named Delaware's Mary Ann Hitchens Award recipient, the department's highest honor.Â
Academically, she was a three-time Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete and a CSC Academic All-District Team selection, being recognized in every season she was eligible.Â
