NEWARK, Del. – On a blustery day at Bob Hannah Stadium, the University of Delaware baseball team was able to outslug Lehigh and defeat the Mountain Hawks 11-10 in a non-league game Tuesday.
The Hens (7-4), who won their third straight game, totaled season-highs of 15 hits and 11 runs while
recording at least one run in all but two innings in the winning effort.
Lehigh (3-10), which lost its eighth straight game, built a 7-3 lead in the third inning, but the Hens answered with a five-run fourth and eventually took the lead on a bases loaded walk in the seventh inning.
Donkin (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) continued his hot play at the plate Tuesday as the senior posted four hits, four RBI, and was a home run away from hitting for the cycle.
“I tried to just stay with my approach and even if I was not getting a hit, I just wanted to feel comfortable at the plate,” said Donkin. “You are not always going to get rewarded for good swings. Sometimes you can hit a ball hard right at somebody, but if you keep putting the barrel on the ball, you are going to get results.”
After Matt Hornich and Andrew Pechstein allowed 10 runs in the first four innings, Kevin Milley (above right) quieted the Lehigh bats as the southpaw pitched the next four innings without surrendering a hit and struck out four. Senior Luke Alicknavitch then earned his second save of the season by striking out the side in the ninth inning.
“We were in a hole early, but the back end of our staff pitched very well down the stretch,” said Sherman. “Milley and Alicknavitch were lights out and allowed us to pull out the win.”
Tuesday's victory marks Delaware's sixth win in its last seven games and the Hens have now defeated Lehigh nine straight times.
Delaware will return to action Friday as the Blue Hens kickoff conference play with a three-game series against Hofstra at Bob Hannah Stadium. First pitch of game one of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m.
