Blue Hens Start CAA Play with a Twinbill Split vs. Hofstra

NEWARK, Del. – On a day that had no shortage of runs, the University of Delaware baseball team began its conference season by splitting a doubleheader vs. Hofstra Saturday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware (8-5, 1-1 CAA) took the first game by a 9-2 margin but fell to the Pride (5-10, 2-3 CAA) 12-7 in game two.
Jim ShermanIn game one, the Blue Hens recorded five extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs from Gary Jones and Diaz Nardo to power Delaware past the Pride.
Davis earned his second win in as many starts as the reigning CAA Pitcher of the Week gave up two runs on six hits, while fanning seven in 6.1 innings of work.
The Hens scored one run in the first before taking control of the game with a four-run third inning.
Hofstra scored its only two runs of the game in the seventh inning to cut the lead to four, but UD answered with three runs in the eighth highlighted by Jones' third home run of the season.
Game two started out in a similar fashion to game one. The Blue Hens took an early lead with a run in the first and starter Chad Martin was in complete command. The freshman surrendered just one hit in the first three innings, but the Pride's bats came to life in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
Hofstra scored its first run in the fourth, but UD answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning.
Hofstra then registered two runs in the fifth inning before breaking the game open with eight runs in the sixth. The onslaught was keyed by a Steven Foster two-out grand slam to give the Pride their first lead of the game.
Martin received a no-decision Saturday as the redshirt freshman allowed five runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings of work.
Nardo led the Hens with three hits in game two while Joe Giacchino slammed his second home run of the season and provided a team-high two RBI.
Delaware will return to action Sunday as the Hens and Pride square off in the rubber match of the three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Giacchino had three total hits on the day and extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
· Nardo and Jones have both hit a team-high three home runs this season.
· In game one, seven UD starters registered at least one hit.
· Hofstra's 17 hits matches George Mason for the most hits surrendered by Delaware this season.
· Luke Alicknavitch pitched the final 2.1 innings of game one without giving up a hit or a run. The senior has only given up one earned run this season and has not allowed a hit in his last three appearances.
