NEWARK, Del. -- Carolyn Szymanski fired a two-hit shutout in the opener while Jessica Grisler and Lisa Stacevicz each posted three hits in the nightcap as the University of Delaware softball team swept a doubleheader from Morgan State, 1-0 and 6-2, Wednesday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Blue Hens, who improved to 13-8 following the pair of wins, scored the only run of the opener during the bottom of the fifth inning. Szymanski led off the frame with a triple to rightcenter, and two outs later pinch runner Morgan Schroll crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Bears starter Amy Begg. That would be all Szymanski would need, as she allowed just two singles and struck out seven batters while improving to 8-4 on the year.
Delaware then jumped in front during the nightcap with three runs in the bottom of the second. Leanna Gearhart singled home Schroll to open the scoring, while Grisler and Stacevicz each following with RBI singles to put the Blue Hens ahead 3-0.
Morgan State, which dropped to 1-14 on the year, got on the board during the top of the fourth, but Grisler singled home Gearhart before scoring on a Stacevicz double to make it a 5-1 game in the bottom half. Each team added an unearned run in the fifth inning to account for the final margin.
Grisler finished 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored, and she is now just one hit and two runs scored behind the school records currently held by Mandy Welch. Stacevicz also was 3 for 4 with a pair of runs batted in for Delaware, while Gearhart went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
Four Blue Hen pitchers combined to allow five hits during the win with Kelly Lupton earning her first victory of the campaign.
Delaware opens its Colonial Athletic Association schedule this weekend with a three-game series at Drexel.
