NEWARK, Del. – Behind hot hitting and a near-flawless performance from starter Ron Marinaccio, the University of Delaware baseball team earned a series win Sunday as the Hens defeated Hofstra 14-1 in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at Bob Hannah Stadium.
UD belted out 13 hits, while Marinaccio allowed just one run on four hits in a complete game effort.
Jim ShermanLike the previous two games of the series, Delaware (9-5, 2-1 CAA) got on the board in the first
inning. The Hens then continued their strong play at the plate as UD scored a run in all but one inning in the winning effort.
Tyler Powell (left) led the Hens with five hits, which included his second triple of the year. Gary Jones and Greg Olenski both recorded a double, while senior Ty Warrington posted a team-high three RBI.
Diaz Nardo notched an RBI single in the first inning and now leads the team with 13 RBI this season.
One of the few trouble spots Marinaccio faced was in the fourth inning. Hofstra (5-11, 2-4 CAA) had runners on second and third with only one out, but the redshirt freshman struck out the next two hitters to escape the jam.
“I've only had a couple starts so, Ty [Warrington] and I are still getting used to each other,” said Marinaccio, who earned his second win of the season Sunday. “Ty is really good behind the plate and I was just able to hit the spots. I was really happy with the way I pitched and glad I could help my team win an conference game.”
The Blue Hens scored 30 runs in the three games against the Pride, which is the biggest offensive output by a Delaware team in a three-game series since the Hens put up 34 runs vs. George Mason in 2013.
Delaware will return to action Tuesday as the Blue Hens host La Salle in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic at Bob Hannah Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
