Hens Unable to Overcome Early Deficit; Fall to La Salle 9-1 in Liberty Bell Classic Opener

NEWARK, Del. – After allowing seven runs in the first inning, the University of Delaware was unable to threaten the La Salle lead as the Blue Hens fell to the Explorers 9-1 Tuesday in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Jim ShermanFreshman Matt Hornich got the start and gave up six earned runs without recording an out. After Hornich was pulled, seven Delaware (9-6) pitchers combined to surrender just one earned run in nine innings of work.
Zach Lopes was responsible for two of UD's five hits in the game, while Tyler Dean clubbed his first career homer and accounted for Delaware's lone run.
Ryan Welling led the Explorers (11-12) with three hits, while three La Salle batters tallied a team-high two RBI in the winning effort.
Tuesday marks the second straight year La Salle has defeated Delaware in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic. The Explorers will now face Rider in the second round of the tournament.
The Blue Hens will hit the road this weekend as UD travels to Boston to take on Northeastern in its first CAA road series of the season.

· 24 Blue Hens saw action in the game, including eight Blue Hen pitchers who took the mound
· Joe Giacchino's 11-game hitting streak was snapped.
· Colman Vila saw his first collegiate action vs. the Explorers as the freshman pitched the third inning and did not allow an earned run.
· Diaz Nardo and Calvin Scott each had one hit for Delaware.
· Nick Spadafino recorded his best performance to date as the righty pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three.
