NEWARK, Del. -- Despite big advantages by Hofstra in shots, groundballs, and faceoffs, the University of Delaware men's lacrosse squad hung tough until late before succumbing 9-5 in its Colonial Athletic Association opener Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.
Delaware senior midfielder Brian Kormondy (Mullen/Highland Ranch, Colo.) netted a team-high three goals for his second hat trick in four games but it wasn't enough as the Blue Hens (4-7, 0-1 CAA) lost their second straight contest.
Hofstra (4-5, 1-1 CAA), which outshot the Hens 40-16, held a 31-18 advantage in groundballs, and won 15 of 17 faceoffs, got big efforts from the foursome of Mike Malave Sam Llinares, Zachary Franco, and Kory Hendrickson to win its first league game of the season.
Malave scored four goals, Llinares contributed two goals and two assists, Franco scored twice, and Hendrickson dished out two assists to go with a goal. Faceoff ace Kris Clarke won 15 of 17 draws.
After falling behind 6-2 at the break, Delaware came out strong in the second half and scored twice to cut the margin to 6-4 with 9:03 left in the third stanza.
"Next week we've got Towson and nothing more needs to be said," Shillinglaw noted. "They certainly have been our long time arch-rival. We want the seniors to finish our regular season honest and with a win. We just have to clean up certain areas of the game and I think we'll be where we want to be."
Sophomore midfielder Steve Delargy (Morristown/Morristown, N.J./at right) also scored a goal and sophomore midfielder Jackson Finigan (Concord-Carlisle/Deerfield Academy/Concord, Mass./top left) dished out an assist to account for the Blue Hen scoring.
Delaware junior Conor Peaks (Ponte Vedra/Ponte Vedra, Fla.) started in goal and posted eight saves before giving way to senior Brett Anton (Madison/Madison, N.J.), who stopped six shots.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware celebrated Armes Forces Day and honored several local servicemen at halftime. Staff Sergeant Warner Ball, a former UD men's lacrosse player and 2007 Delaware graduate, served as Honorary Captain. Warner was a United States Army Special Forces Green Beret in 2009-2014, was deployed to Afghanistan twice, and received the Bronze Star.
