NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader with UNCW Saturday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium, taking the opener, 3-2, before dropping a 4-1 verdict in the nightcap.
UNCW (14-12, 1-4 CAA) jumped ahead in the opener by scoring a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning, but Delaware (15-11, 2-2 CAA) drew even in the bottom of the third when Sarah Bencivenga tripled home Jessica Grisler and Lisa Stacevicz. Grisler's run was the 120th of her career, as she became UD's leader in runs scored on the play.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth, when Grisler singled up the middle and moved to third on an infield single by Stacevicz. Bencivenga then dropped down a squeeze bunt, allowing Grisler to score the go-ahead run. Blue Hen pitcher Carolyn Szymanski then fired a pair of scoreless frames to secure the victory, as she picked up her 10th win of the season.
Grisler, Stacevicz and Mariah Kondravy all had two hits for the Blue Hens, with Bencivenga driving home all three UD runs.
During the second game of the day, the Seahawks took the lead in the opening frame on an RBI double by Abby Harris, while a sacrifice fly by Merritt Wilkinson in the third gave UNCW a 2-0 lead. The Seahawks added two insurance runs in the seventh, before Delaware mounted a late rally.
Heather Oakley and Szymanski opened the frame with singles, while one out later Mattie Nuccio reached on an error to load the bases. Leanna Gearhart then lofted a sacrifice fly to left to chase home pinch runner Alyshia Dellatore, but Cailey Isaacs was thrown out at second base on the play to end the game.
Oakley finished 3 for 3 at the plate during the nightcap, while Bencivenga and Szymanski added a hit apiece.
The Blue Hens and Seahawks conclude their weekend set on Sunday with a single game beginning at 12 noon.
Hen Scratchings:
• Grisler, who set the UD hits mark last Sunday, was honored by the UD softball program in between games of the twinbill
• Stacevicz went 0 for 2 in the nightcap, halting a 10-game hitting streak
• Oakley's three-hit game was her third of the year and second in three contests
• Bencivenga knocked home three runs in a game for the second time this season
• Kelly Lupton allowed two runs in three innings to pick up the loss in the nightcap
