BALTIMORE, Md. -- Chivarsky Corbett's three-point attempt from the left wing was just off the mark as the University of Delaware men's basketball team dropped a heart-breaking 67-64 decision to Northeastern in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Quarterfinals Saturday night at Royal Farms Arena.
Sixth-seeded Delaware ends its season with a 10-20 record, while the third-seeded Huskies improve to 21-11 and will face UNCW in Sunday's semifinals.
UD freshman Kory Holden led the Blue Hens with 20 points and five assists, while Kyle Anderson added 11 points in his final collegiate game.
Maurice Jeffers scored 10 points, while Cazmon Hayes and Corbett each added nine. Delaware shot 25 of 53 (47.2 percent) from the field and 10 of 12 from the foul line, and allowed just one offensive rebound to the Huskies.
David Walker paced Northeastern with 17 points, Quincy Ford added 16 and Zach Stahl contributed 13 for the Huskies, who connected on 23 of 42 field goals attempts including 7 of 13 from long range, and went 14 of 17 from the foul line.
Delaware trailed by four at halftime, but Hayes scored the first nine Blue Hen points of the second period as UD pulled even at 40-40 at the 17:43 mark.
The Huskies went back up eight points, before UD answered with six straight to get back within two on a Marvin King-Davis dunk.
The Blue Hens pulled within a point on a Holden jumper with 30 seconds left, and Delaware had a chance to take the lead after Walker missed the front end of a one and one. However Corbett's contested layup wouldn't fall, while Walker then connected on a pair of foul shots.
Holden then drove for a layup to again make it a one-point game with eight seconds on the clock, but after Walker hit two more from the line, Corbett's last second three-pointer was just long.
“We didn't get the win but with the effort our guys gave on the court, I couldn't be prouder of them,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “This is a tremendous group, and I'm proud to be associated with them. They exemplify everything that's right about being a student-athlete, and represent the University of Delaware very well. These guys have improved and grown up before our eyes this season.”
Delaware opened with seven turnovers in the first four minutes of the game, falling behind Northeastern 11-4 following a Ford three-pointer.
Later in the half the Blue Hens used an 11-2 run, culminated with a Corbett steal and breakaway dunk, to go in front 24-21 with five minutes on the clock.
However the Huskies answered with six straight, while a Walker last second three-pointer gave Northeastern a 35-31 halftime lead.
Game Notes:
• Delaware fell just short of its third consecutive CAA semifinal appearance
• Northeastern advanced to the CAA semifinals for the third straight year
• UD fell to 4-2 against the Huskies in the postseason
• The Blue Hens had won four straight games away from Newark
• Anderson finishes his career with 1,292 career points, good for 13th in UD history
