Coach Scott Grzenda to be Inducted into Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame

“When you grow up watching and idolizing so many outstanding players and coaches that have their roots in Mercer County, it's extremely humbling to be recognized and included in this very special group,” said Grzenda.
Grzenda attended Steinert High School in Hamilton Township, N.J., where he started for three years and was named the 1983 Spartan of the Year.
Before becoming the head coach of the Delaware women's squad, Grzenda was a standout for the Blue Hens men's team during his time as an undergraduate at UD.
Grzenda, a 1987 graduate of the University of Delaware, was a three-time All-East Coast Conference selection at midfield from 1984-86 and earned regional All-American honors during his playing days for the Blue Hens.
He finished his four-year career with 23 goals and seven assists and was the Hens' leading scorer his senior year in 1986 with eight goals and two assists in leading the team to the ECC championship game. He was a team captain in 1985 and 1986 and still ranks in Delaware's all-time top 10 lists for goals scored and points.
Grzenda began his coaching career at Lynchburg (Va.) College as a graduate assistant coach for the women's soccer team in 1987 and 1988. In 1989 he served as a graduate assistant coach for the men's program at Lynchburg.
The only coach in UD women's soccer history, Grzenda has compiled an impressive career record of 236-202-44, including a 7-9-2 mark during the 2014 season.
Grzenda led his teams to three second place finishes in America East Tournament play in 1994-96, and been named league Coach of the Year three times. His teams have posted 16 winning seasons and posted 10 or more wins 11 times.
Grzenda has led 12 of his teams to league post-season play. His teams made three straight America East Tournament championship game appearances in 1994-96 and have advanced to the league tournament semifinals eight times.
In addition to his duties at Delaware, Grzenda assists with the Olympic Development Program.
Grzenda will be inducted along with Bob Apgar, Larry Povia, Eddie Leibe, Julie Shackford, Mike Lee, and Nick Wiener.
