Lafferty Tied For Fourth, Blue Hens Fifth After First Day of CAA Championship

SOUTHPORT, N.C. -- Blue Hen freshman Blaine Lafferty is tied for fourth place while the University of Delaware men's golf team is fifth following Friday's opening round at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.
The Blue Hens posted a 306 team score on Friday, ending the day in fifth place out of nine squads. Defending team champion College of Charleston leads the field with a 293 score, while UNCW is second at 301. James Madison sits in third place at 302, followed by William & Mary at 304 and Delaware.
Lafferty shot an even par 72 on the par 72, 6,784-yard Founders Club course at St. James Plantation, finishing one shot off his career low round. Lafferty, who finished both the front nine and back nine at even par, posted five birdies on the day.
UD junior Kyle Martin carded a over par 73 during his opening round, ending the day in sixth place in the individual standings. Martin birdied 3 and 4 to quickly move to two under for the day, while another birdie on 8 put him at one under through the front nine. Martin then parred his final seven holes of the day to finish the round at one over.
Freshman Kieran Purcell shot an eight over par 80 to finish the day tied for 31st place, while classmate Erik Dulik is tied for 33rd place following his nine over par round of 81. Fellow rookie Jack Gianniny, who recorded a 14 over par 86, enters Saturday's action in a tie for 40th place.
John Jonas of Charleston leads the field with a two under par 70 while teammate Josh Lorenzetti and UNCW's Thomas Eldridge are one shot back.
The second round of the three-round tournament will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
