Blue Hens Hit Two Grand Slams, Outslug William & Mary for 17-14 Win

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware and William & Mary slugged it out at Bob Hannah Stadium Saturday afternoon but it was the Blue Hens who prevailed for a wild 17-14 Colonial Athletic Association baseball victory.
Delaware (17-15, 6-8 CAA), which downed the Tribe for the second straight day, scored six runs in the second inning and five more in the sixth and got grand slams from senior second baseman Zach Lopes and sophomore first baseman Nick Liggett on the way to the victory. Freshman right-hander
Nick Spadafino (at left) got the final three outs in the eighth and pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the win and improve to 3-0.
The Blue Hens and Tribe combined for 31 runs, 37 hits, nine doubles, two triples, and six home runs in the slugfest.
After Delaware took a 14-7 lead after seven innings, William & Mary put up seven runs in the eighth thanks to three home runs, including a two-run shot by Charley Gould, a solo shot by Tim Hoehn, and
another solo round-tripper from by Josh Smith that knotted the score at 14-14.But the Hens bounced back right away, scoring three runs in the eighth off reliever Joseph Gaouette. Lopes knocked in Brock Niggebrugge on an RBI double with one out to break the tie, Diaz Nardo followed an RBI singles, and Norm Donkin later scored on a wild pitch to clinch the win.
Lopes went 3 for 4 with a career-high five RBI and four runs scored, Liggett hit a home run for the second straight day and finished with a career-high five RBI, Nardo went 3 for 5 and finished with four RBI, and Joe Giacchino went 3 for 6, knocked in a run, and scored three times.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware honored the 1970 College World Series team in a pre-game ceremony with 14 members from that team and head coach Bob Hannah on hand for a 45-year reunion. All 15 threw out the first pitch simultaneously to 15 current players
• The Hens and William & Mary will close out the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Hens looking to complete their first league sweep of the season and first since taking three straight from Northeastern at home last Apr. 4-6.
• Delaware's Chad Martin (1-3) is scheduled to face William & Mary's Aaron Fernandez (3-2)
• William & Mary committed five errors in the game but Delaware did not have a miscue
• Lopes fell a single short of the cycle as he homered in the second, tripled in the seventh, and doubled in the eighth. He also walked twice
• Niggebrugge went 2 for 5 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games
