JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- The University of Delaware softball team closed out the non-conference portion of its season in impressive fashion with a doubleheader sweep of Saint Peter's, 15-0 and 12-4, Wednesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field.
Delaware (29-11) took control of the opener by scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. Mariah Kondravy doubled home a pair to break the UD single season RBI record, and after Lisa Stacevicz drove her home with a single, Carolyn Szymanski drilled a two-run homer to rightfield.
Leanna Gearhart and Kondravy delivered run-scoring singles in the second before Szymanski drove a run home with a single of her own to increase the margin to 9-0. Sarah Bencivenga blasted a solo shot to open the fourth, and after Szymanski hit her second two-run shot of the day, Gearhart belted a three-run homer to close the scoring. Delaware's four home runs during the contest tied the school record, previously set vs. Montclair in 1977 and vs. Army in 2013.
Szymanski finished 3 for 3 with six RBI, tied for third most in UD history, while Gearhart was 3 for 4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Grisler added three hits and two runs scored, while Kondravy had two hits, three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Szymanski picked up her 17th win of the season, tied for fourth most in a UD single season, with three shutouts innings before Jordan Cargile fired two scoreless frames of relief.
Bencivenga drilled a two-run homer during the top of the first inning of the nightcap, before RBI singles by Grisler and Gearhart in the second made it a 4-0 game. Stacevicz tripled in Bencivenga in the top of the third, but Samantha Storms belted a grand slam in the bottom half to bring the Peacocks (2-38) within a run.
However Delaware answered right back with a four spot in the top of the fourth, ignited by an RBI double by Grisler. Kondravy then singled home a pair, while a run-scoring double from Bencivenga capped the outburst. Szymanski, Giovanna Kolofer and Grisler added RBI singles during the sixth inning that put the game away for the Blue Hens.
Kelly Lupton earned the win after allowing four unearned runs, while Kiersten Coffman, Taylor Curran and Kennedy Lester combined for five scoreless innings. Grisler, Gearhart and Bencivenga had three hits apiece to pace the 18-hit Blue Hen attack, while three players added two hits each.
