NEWARK, Del. – Despite outhitting No. 21 Maryland by an 11-7 margin in Wednesday's game, the University of Delaware was unable to take advantage of its opportunities as the Blue Hens fell to the Terrapins 9-4 in a non-league battle at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Jim ShermanMaryland received plenty of help from the Blue Hen pitching staff in the game. UD surrendered 10 walk to the Terrapins (32-13), while Maryland scored four of its runs via error, wild pitch, or a walk/hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.
After going down in order in the first, the Terps took control of the game with a four-run second inning. Maryland scored its first two runs on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and an errant pickoff throw from UD catcher Ty Warrington. LaMonte Wade then slapped a two-run single to left field to give the Terrapins a 4-0 lead.
After Brock Niggebrugge scored on a wild pitch in the third, Warrington knocked in another run with an RBI double in the fourth. Diaz Nardo pulled the Blue Hens to within two runs of Maryland with an RBI single in the fifth inning, which gives him a team-high 29 RBI.
Maryland answered with three runs in the sixth and scored another in the seventh to extend its lead to 9-3.
The last threat to the Maryland lead came in the seventh inning. Zach Lopes initiated the scoring with an RBI single to cut the lead to 9-4. Then, after Norm Donkin and Diaz Nardo each recorded an out, Greg Olenski singled and Calvin Scott drew a walk to load the bases with Nick Liggett coming to the plate.
Liggett, who blasted a grand slam vs. William & Mary, put a charge into the ball, but was only able to reach the edge of the warning track before being snagged by Wade.
Maryland now leads the all-time series vs. Delaware 23-12-1 and has won seven of the last eight meeting between the programs.
Lopes and Giacchino led UD with three hits on the day, while Lopes, Nardo, and Warrington each accounted for one RBI.
Delaware will next be in action Friday as the Hens resume their Colonial Athletic Association schedule this weekend for a three-game set at UNCW.
