Blue Hens Avoid Sweep, Down Dukes 9-5

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The University of Delaware baseball team was able to salvage a win Sunday as the Blue Hens defeated James Madison 9-5 in a Colonial Athletic Association tilt.
Jim Sherman. “Ron Marinaccio has done a great job for us in each of his outings and Tyler Powell and Zach Lopes are really swinging the bat well.”For the third time in the series, UD jumped out to a lead in the first inning as Norm Donkin put the Hens on the board with an RBI single. James Madison answered with a run in the second and another in the third, but Delaware took control of the game by scoring four runs in the fourth inning.
Greg Olenski started the scoring for the Blue Hens in the fourth with an RBI double before Lopes, Joe Giacchino, and Ty Warrington each batted in a runner to give UD a 5-2 lead.
The Blue Hens (10-11, 3-6 CAA) then added to their lead with an RBI single from Giacchino in the fifth before Donkin belted his first home run of the season in the sixth inning to give UD a commanding 7-2 lead..
Jeremy Ake and Warrington each added an RBI in the eighth inning to give the Hens their final total of nine runs.
James Madison (12-17, 2-7 CAA) threatened with three runs in the ninth to cut the lead to four runs, but UD closer Luke Alicknavitch was able to get out of the jam and secure the victory.
Powell led the Blue Hens with three hits and three runs scored in the winning effort, while Giacchino, Donkin, and Warrington each provided a team-high two RBI.
Marinaccio earned his third win of the season as the redshirt freshman scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs over seven innings of work. The righty also recorded seven strikeouts in his fifth career start.
The Dukes were led by Ky Parrot with three hits, while five James Madison batters recorded one RBI each.
Delaware will return to action Wednesday as the Hens travel to Dover to take on in-state rival Delaware State. First pitch between the Blue Hens and Hornets is set for 3 p.m.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Lopes led Delaware with seven hits in the series.
· Lopes and Olenski each registered a double Sunday, which were Delaware's lone extra-base hits in the contest.
· Delaware left 14 men on base Sunday.
· Both teams recorded 13 hits.
· Eight of the nine batters in the Delaware starting lineup posted at least one hit.
· The Blue Hens will take a break from conference action next weekend and will resume their CAA schedule Apr. 17 as UD hosts current conference leader Charleston.
· This weekend marked the first time Delaware has lost a series to James Madison since 2010.
