WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- The University of Delaware softball team plays its lone non-conference action of the week on Wednesday when the Blue Hens head to Monmouth for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader with the Hawks.
The Blue Hens are 19-13 overall and 4-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association heading into the pair of contests, while the Hawks are 7-13 overall and 3-0 in the MAAC.
Delaware took one of three games at the College of Charleston over the weekend, salvaging the final game on Sunday with a 3-2 win over the Cougars. Sarah Bencivenga led the way with a pair of doubles while Heather Oakley, Mariah Kondravy and Jessica Grisler each recorded RBI singles. Carolyn Szymanski picked up her 13th victory in the circle by allowing just two runs and striking out six in the complete game effort.
Kondravy recorded a hit and an RBI during all five games last week and homered in four straight contests, as she earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors on Monday. She has increased her batting average to .373 on the season, while her six home runs are third most in the league. Grisler is hitting .348 on the year, ranking fifth in the conference with 39 hits and tied for third with 27 runs scored.
Leanna Gearhart leads the CAA with seven triples, three more than any player in the league, while Bencivenga ranks second with 11 doubles.
Monmouth is coming off a doubleheader sweep of Quinnipiac on Saturday, as the Hawks posted 10-1 and 6-5 wins over the Bobcats. Jill Freese is hitting .318 on the season for Monmouth, while Chloe Howerth carries a .302 average into the doubleheader.
The Hawks lead the all-time series with the Blue Hens, 3-2, but Delaware took both meetings last year at the Norfolk State Spartan Classic, 9-4 and 8-0. Szymanski fired a no-hitter during the second win over the Hawks, the 15th no-hitter in UD history.
