Hens Earn State Bragging Rights, Down Delaware State 12-7

DOVER, Del. – The University of Delaware was able to establish state baseball bragging rights Wednesday as the Blue Hens defeated Delaware State 12-7 in a non-league contest.
After Delaware State (6-20) jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning, the Hens (12-12) scored three runs in the second and third innings. UD then added another two runs in the fourth to take control of the game.
Wild pitches and errors from Delaware State aided the Hens' scoring efforts in the second and a Ty Warrington RBI double highlighted their offensive output in the third.
Tyler Powell, Greg Olenski, and Brock Niggebrugge supplied the offense for UD in the fourth as the trio each batted in a run in the frame.
Joe Giacchino provided his 14th RBI of the season and Warrington scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning. Zach Lopes then capped the UD scoring with an RBI single to give the Hens a 12-7 advantage.
Giacchino led the Blue Hens with three RBI in the winning effort, while Powell had a team-high three hits.
The Hornets tallied nine total hits in the loss. Cameron Onderko, Devin Beverly, and Chris Gonzalez led Delaware State with two hits each.
Colman Vila made his second career start Wednesday and the freshman pitched two innings and allowed four earned runs. Andrew Pechstein pitched the third and fourth innings before Eric Sawyer came on in relief and tossed three innings to earn his first win of the season.
The Blue Hens will return to the diamond Friday as Delaware hosts Sacred Heart at Bob Hannah Stadium. First pitch between the Hens and Pioneers is scheduled for 3 p.m.
