NEWARK, Del. – Behind a strong effort at the plate, the University of Delaware dashed Towson's postseason hopes Saturday with a 10-4 victory in a Colonial Athletic Association tilt at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Towson (17-35-2, 9-15 CAA) needed to win Saturday in order to clinch the final spot in next week's CAA Tournament, but instead William & Mary will now be the No. 6 seed.
Jim ShermanAfter Delaware (23-22, 11-13 CAA) built a 2-1 lead through three innings, Brady Policelli launched a three-run home run in the top of the fourth to give Towson a one run lead.
UD, however, did not let the Tigers keep the advantage for long. After Calvin Scott and Diaz Nardo made two quick outs to start the bottom of the fourth, the Blue Hens strung together five straight two-out hits, including a mammoth home run from Joe Giacchino to put the Hens on top again. Zach Lopes and Norm Donkin knocked in a run each to wrap up the five-run frame.
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth, but Delaware put the lead out of Towson's reach with a three-run sixth inning. Greg Olenski and Tyler Powell each tallied an RBI double, while Scott provided the exclamation point with his second home run of the season.
Giacchino led Delaware with three RBI, while five Blue Hens posted multi-hit games.
“It was great to see the fire in our bats today,” said Giacchino. “The conference tournament is a new season, but at the same time you want to be playing your best baseball at this time of the year. I am extremely confident heading into next week and would not want to go there with any other group of guys."
Kevin Milley got the start for the Hens and pitched 3.2 innings, allowed three hits, and surrendered just one earned run. Milley's innings were limited in preparation of the CAA Tournament.
Nick Spadafino, Colman Vila, and Luke Alicknavitch combined to pitch the final 5.1 innings and did not allow an earned run. Vila and Alicknavitch both had hitless and scoreless outings.
Delaware will begin postseason play Wednesday as the Hens face Elon in the first game of the CAA Tournament. The UD-Elon matchup is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at College of Charleston's Ballpark at Patriot's Point. All CAA Tournament games will be broadcasted on CAA.tv.
