NEWARK, Del. -- Mariah Kondravy cracked another home run while Jessica Grisler added two hits in her final game as a Blue Hen, but it wasn't enough as the University of Delaware softball team dropped its season finale to Towson, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Tigers closed its regular season at 35-20 overall including 10-11 in the Colonial Athletic Association, and advance to next week's league tournament.
Delaware finishes with a 30-23 overall mark and 6-14 in the CAA, as the Blue Hens recorded the fifth most wins in UD history.
Towson opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Missy McCormick singled home Holiday Cahill, but Delaware answered right back in the bottom half when Kondravy (below) belted an opposite field to leftfield to knot the contest.
Kondravy ends her freshman year with a Delaware single season record 15 longballs, the most in the CAA and already third on the Blue Hens career home runs chart.
Delaware then took the lead in the bottom of the second when Danielle Wissinger (left) drove a pitch off the leftfield wall for a double, allowing pinch runner Morgan Schroll to score all the way from first base.
However Towson would take control with three runs in the third on RBI doubles by Brook Miko, McCormick and Shelby Stracher, before the Tigers added a run in the fourth when Miko was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Grisler and Leanna Gearhart singled with two outs in the fifth as Delaware attempted a rally, but McCormick retired Kondray on a groundout and then fired two hitless innings to seal the victory.
Grisler made the last out of the game with a sharp grounder to short, ending her outstanding career with school records of 239 hits and 135 runs scored.
McCormick improved to 19-6 with the complete game victory for the Tigers, while Delaware starter Kiersten Coffman dropped to 4-4 after allowing four runs, just one earned, on five hits in 2.2 innings of work.
Hen Scratchings:
• Grisler has 34 more hits and 16 more runs scored than any other player in UD history
• Gearhart ended her season on an 11-game hitting streak, the longest of the season by a Blue Hen
• Delaware finished the year with 426 hits, one shy of the school's single season mark
• UD's team batting average of .304 is the third highest in school history, and the highest since 1977
• Grisler and fellow senior Heather Oakley were honored in a pregame ceremony prior to playing their final collegiate games
